Anchors Aweigh! Mothers and Daughters Bond as they Navigate the Waters of Social Media and More aboard the Yacht Starship

Tampa, Fla. (April 10, 2014) - There are few relationships as loving and frustrating as the bond between a mother and daughter. Adding the distractions and dangers of modern technology, such as social media, further complicates the dynamic. On May 3, BayCare Health System welcomes mothers and daughters to set sail on a three-hour cruise to bond and learn about navigating the waters of social media and more during the second annual Mother and Daughter Conference.

Kelli Burns, Ph.D., Associate Director/Professor at the School of Mass Communications at the University of South Florida, will chart the course on safe social media, giving mothers and daughters an opportunity to ask questions, explore cyber bullying, recognize the permanency of a post or tweet and understand the viral nature of pictures and videos.

As a single mother of an only child, Liza Cuervo is looking forward to spending a Saturday at sea with her daughter learning better communication methods. She says, “My kid practically lives attached to some type of device. I try to make her aware of the dangers, but sometimes I feel like she might take it as me nagging or over protecting her. I see this as an opportunity for her to hear it from other people, maybe a professional, where she accepts it as real and not just mom.”

A “daughter’s only” break out session gives the girls a chance to submit anonymous questions about changes in their body to a child advocacy expert. While, on the other deck, a pediatrician teaches mothers about the emotional changes of puberty and offers facts about the HPV vaccine. In addition to the seminars, there will be typical cruise activities such as music, lunch and dancing. Mothers and daughters or women with a special girl in their life, ages 11-14, are welcome aboard. Cost is $20 per person. An adult must accompany the girls and one adult can bring up to two children. All guests must pre-register by calling (813) 443-3007 or visiting BayCareEvents.org.
