Tampa’s Busiest Emergency Center Opens New Expansion Designed to Enhance Patient-Centered Care

Tampa, Fla., (July 17, 2014) - The emergency center at St. Joseph’s Hospital is Tampa’s busiest, treating up to 500 patients a day, for concerns ranging from traumatic injury and minor emergencies to heart attack and stroke. After more than two years of construction, the hospital is opening a new and expanded emergency department, offering state of the art technology and increasing the number of private rooms from 77 to 100.

Additional features include:

• Larger pediatric emergency department with board-certified pediatric emergency physicians trained to provide the highest level of care for children.
• Bariatric room to accommodate obese patients in a comfortable environment.
• Fetal Monitor Data Connectivity, which allows highly-trained staff across the street at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital to monitor the fetus of pregnant women while doctors treat the mother in the emergency room.
• Digital radiology, which allows for immediate viewing of x-rays by ER and trauma physicians during trauma situations (available October 2014).
• Bedside ultrasound machine for faster IV starts and trauma diagnostics
• Cell phone and electronic device charging stations for visitors
• X-track implementation, a vertical patient model

St. Joseph’s Emergency Center recognizes that patients value both their time and quality of care they receive. X-track is a unique model that allows patients who do not need extensive diagnostic workup to be evaluated quickly and receive quality, compassionate treatment in a more comfortable environment. The new emergency center is scheduled to start treating patients on Monday, July 21, 2014. About 145,000 adults and children are treated in the St. Joseph’s Hospital Emergency Center each year.
