05/17/2012

St. Joseph’s Children’s Advocacy Center receivef a $25,000 donation from the Suncoast for Kids Foundation to help fund Mission Nutrition, Germaine the Germ Thing and Body Safari, three community education programs developed to promote health and well-being to elementary children in Hillsborough County.

Children in school are at an increased risk for exposure to germs that cause colds, the flu and other illnesses. Through Germaine the Germ Thing, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital teaches children the importance of good hand washing, including when, how, and why to properly wash their hands to prevent the spread of germs.

Body Safari introduces young students to the muscular, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, skin, respiratory and nervous systems. The program also provides fun ideas and tips on how to be more active to maintain a healthy heart.

Mission Nutrition teaches students what foods the body needs to stay healthy. Hands-on activities illustrate how to read and interpret food labels to make informed food choices.
