The Children's Advocacy Center offers a diverse hands-on educational experience. This unique opportunity allows students to learn about the issues impacting children and families here in the Tampa Bay Area. Our program is designed to give students the skills to work independently or alongside our team of educators. Because of the training we offer students, we require two semesters to a year commitment from our interns. Our interns will gain experience in health education, program implementation, program evaluation, data collection, marketing and retail management.
We have a variety of different internship programs:
Steinbrenner Children’s Emergency Room Intern
We have a 22-bed emergency and trauma center dedicated to children from birth to 18 years of age. St. Joseph’s Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) works in collaboration with the emergency room staff and functions as a liaison between St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and the community with regards to children’s health and safety education.
The Emergency Room Intern will collect and analyze reason for ER visits to identify community needs. This data will assist the CAC in identifying “real time” health and injury trends and media outreach. The intern will report this data at our monthly staff meetings. Experience with Excel will be required. The intern will also be providing bedside education, functioning as a health and safety educator. You will be asked to assess patients and/or family member’s knowledge/understanding of particular health topics and provide supplemental education, safety products and take home materials. You may develop health and safety materials for use in the emergency room and in the community. Providing support and comfort for families that are treated in the emergency room is paramount in this position. The intern must be comfortable in high stress critical care environments. Your internship hours will be 3-8pm twice a week.
Community Event Intern
Interns will assist St. Joseph's Child Advocates during community events. Each intern will be trained to run interactive health and safety games and lessons. The community intern will be able to provide information on St. Joseph's Children's Advocacy programs, will have an opportunity to educate children and adults about the importance of preventing injuries to children and families and provide safety products and resources to encourage families to childproof their homes, ensure that children are appropriately immunized and provide assistance in helping families establish a medical home and health care program.
Interns must have transportation to and from community events and must be willing to work some weekends and some evening hours.
The Safety Store Intern
The Safety Store Intern would be responsible for assisting store coordinator with the day to day operations of The Safety Store and will have the opportunity to work one on one with families to assess their safety needs. The Safety Store Intern will assist in sales of safety products and provide education on how to use and maintain the safety products. The Safety Store Intern will be trained on safety priority areas including child passenger safety, home safety, emergency preparedness, water safety, bike safety and asthma education.
