Thank you for your interest in our practicum program at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. This practicum program is intended for those interested in learning more about the Child Life field and working with hospitalized children. Below are some frequently asked questions about our practicum program.
How long is the practicum program?
Our practicum program is a total of 150-hours. Many of our practicum students have full-time jobs or are currently enrolled in classes, so the hours per week are flexible in order to meet the needs of our students. We require that practicum students work anywhere between a minimum of 12-hours per week and a maximum of 20-hours per week.
What areas of the hospital do practicum students get to experience?
Practicum students are assigned to shadow Certified Child Life Specialists throughout various areas of the hospital. Clinical areas that practicum students may experience are:
- General in-patient units
- Special Procedures/Day Hospital
- Emergency Department
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU)
When are practicum students accepted?
St. Joseph's Children's Hospital follows the internship guidelines and deadlines set forth by the Child Life Council.
Do I have to be enrolled in a college or university to apply?
No, you do not have to be enrolled in a college or university to apply. We accept independent students as well as students currently enrolled in a college/university and require course credits.
What is expected out of practicum students?
- Total of 150 practicum hours, working between a minimum of 12 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week
- Facilitation of playroom activities once a week
- Attendance for three in-services from child life staff
- Daily journals
- One-page summary of reading assignment
- Final paper about what student has learned
- Regular meetings with Practicum Coordinator

How does the selection process work?
Applicants will be contacted following the application deadline. A phone interview will be set up at that time. Selections will be made and you will be contacted regarding your status by the deadlines set forth by the Child Life Council.
