Many of our volunteers work directly with our patients and families. Being a hospitalized child can be a frightening experience for many reasons. As a volunteer you will be able to help the children cope better with this experience by providing fun activities or by offering comfort and support to the parents and families. Some special training is required for working with patients.

A Child Life Unit Based Volunteer might:

  • Engage patients in age appropriate activities in playrooms or at bedside
  • Assist in delivering and picking up toys, movies and other items to/from patient rooms
  • Clean toys and games
  • Help to maintain playrooms (restocking and straightening up at beginning/end of shift)
  • Use good listening skills with patients and families
  • Transport children to/from Child Life activities
  • Assist with one-on-one training of new volunteers
  • Read and play games with children who cannot play for themselves
  • Take the Art Cart or Comfort Cart to each patient or family
  • Offer comfort in any way that seems appropriate
  • Individually package bedside arts and crafts materials
  • Offer parents a much needed break as you stay with the child
  • Help Child Life Specialists with special projects or events

Shifts: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.

A Baby Holder Volunteer might:

  • Check with nursing staff about which babies are alone and in need of attention
  • Hold, rock, and interact with babies that are on isolation precautions
  • Feed any child as directed by staff
  • Offer parents a much needed break as you stay with the baby

Shifts: Flexible. There are no set times for baby holders because infants have needs many hours of the day and night. Please communicate with us your availability and we will find the right location for you. Any evening and weekend volunteers must be available to train with an experienced baby holder during the day until comfortable being independent.

A Volunteer Services Volunteer might:

  • Assemble information packets for volunteers
  • Answer telephones and take messages
  • File paperwork
  • Update computer database
  • Assist with mailings
  • Assist with one-on-one training of new volunteers

Shifts: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
