Spasticity Center

St. Joseph's Children's Hospital's Spasticity Center provides medical and surgical care for children with spasticity and other movement disorders. Our multidisciplinary team of dedicated and highly skilled specialists work together to treat each child's specific needs. All members of the team have special training and experience in caring for children with the most common causes of spasticity, like cerebral palsy.

Our Spasticity Center generally treats the two main types of spasticity:

Spastic Diplegia

  • The child generally has good mental function.
  • The child is usually born prematurely.
  • Spasticity occurs in both arms and legs but primarily in the legs.
  • There may be weakness that is masked by the spasticity.

Spastic Quadriplegia

  • The child frequently has a severe mental handicap and is unlikely to achieve independent living.
  • The child is usually born full term with a specific lesion occurring at or near birth.
  • Spasticity occurs about the same in all limbs.
  • There may be weakness that is masked by the spasticity.

Our team consists of:

  • Neurologist
  • Neurosurgeons
  • Orthopedic surgeon
  • Physiatrist
  • Physical therapists
