75 Years of Compassionate Care

St. Joseph's Hospital Celebrates 75 years of Caring
For Tampa Bay

The Beginning
In 1933, a small group of Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York arrived in Tampa and found a city badly in need of medical facilities.  By October 1934 they had purchased a partially finished hospital and completed construction.  Such was the beginning of St. Joseph's Hospital.  This hospital contained an emergency room, rooms to accommodate 40 patients, two large operating rooms, an obstetrical delivery room, laboratory, pharmacy, kitchen and dining rooms, and what was considered the most advanced x-ray department in the state.  The rest, as the cliché goes, is history as St. Joseph's hospital continued to grow and add services to meet the needs of the Tampa community:

  1934 - Original St. Joseph's Hospital opens
1951 - New wing with 75 additional beds added

1953 - East wing with 50 additional beds added

 1955 - 50 additional beds added

1967 - New 400 bed St. Joseph's Hospital opens at current location

1969 -
New Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center opens

1970 - Eight floor, 88 bed children's "Penthouse" added, 40-bed Mental Health Center opens

1977 - Coronary care unit opens

1979 - Cardiac Catheterization lab opens

1983 - 60 bed Cancer Center opens, Cardiac Surgery Unit opens

1990 - St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of Tampa opens

1993 - St. Joseph's Women's Hospital opens
2009 - St. Joseph's Hospital's 75th Year   2010 - St. Joseph's Hospital-North opens
