South Florida Baptist Hospital Becomes Premier Destination For Joint Replacement Surgery
05/18/2006
South Florida Baptist Hospital and John C. Carrozzella, M.D., now offer computer-assisted procedures for patients suffering from joint pain. The hospital is among the first in the area to offer the state-of-the-art orthopedic joint replacement surgery. Plant City, Lakeland and eastern Hillsborough County residents no longer have to travel to larger cities for the high-tech procedure.

The new technology is essentially GPS for orthopedics. The new computer equipment, often used for precision neurosurgery, allows orthopedic surgeons to more accurately align the implants using navigation technology. It allows the surgeon to make adjustments within a fraction of a degree, helping to ensure optimal fit for the implant and optimal knee motion.

Precise alignment is an important factor that may reduce joint wear and extend the life of the implant, Dr. Carrozzella explained. Use of the system has many potential benefits, including improved joint stability and range of motion. Smaller incisions are another advantage.
