Stroke. Aneurysms. They rank among the most challenging medical conditions faced by the human population. Why? These abnormalities attack the human brain, the center of the body, the seat of the mind.
Strokes are the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. They affect someone in this nation every 53 seconds. They claim a life every 3.3 minutes. With these type of statistics, it-s probably no surprise that stroke is one of the top ten diagnoses at St. Joseph-s Hospital.
In order to combat the onslaught of stroke and aneurysm, St. Joseph-s Hospital developed its own Neuroscience Program in 2000, which now houses one of the nation-s most comprehensive stroke and aneurysm programs. St. Joseph-s Hospital has been named a comprehensive stroke center by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration and is one of just eight stroke centers in Florida to receive this designation, which certifies that St. Joseph-s Hospital is nationally recognized to deliver the highest quality care to stroke patients.
Whether it-s a cutting-edge procedure called coiling, used to stop the bleeding caused by ruptured aneurysms; revolutionary drug-delivery systems to more quickly dissolve the blood clots that cause strokes; or intracranial angioplasty, a procedure that loosens the plaque clogging arteries leading to the brain; the medical professionals at the Neuroscience Program use their expertise to embrace the ever-evolving technologies that brighten the long-term prognosis of stroke and aneurysm victims.
Historically, the outlook for patients facing strokes and aneurysms has been grim. Paralysis, incapacitation, and death were common. But recent medical advances embraced by the physicians and medical professionals of the Neuroscience Program have brightened the prognoses. So stellar is their work that the Federal Government has named the Neuroscience Program at St. Joseph-s Hospital a National Center for Excellence in the field of stroke and aneurysm treatment.
