Pedestrian
Safety:
Safe Kids Walk
This Way
Walk This Way occurs on International Walk
Your Child to School Day the first Wednesday in October. The main goal of the
program is to increase students walking or biking to and from school. Road
safety instruction, encouraging healthy lifestyles and increasing parent
involvement are important aspects of this program.
The Safe Routes to School
Program
This program's goal is to make it safer,
easier and more fun for children grades K through 8 to walk or bicycle to and
from school. Funding and Administration for Florida's Safe Routes to School
Program is provided by the Florida Department of Transportation. More detailed
information can be found at http://srtsfl.org/.
School Safety Committees
Safe
Kids members and FedEx volunteers work with school administrators, parents and
other advocates to establish School Safety Committees. The committee meets
throughout the academic year to plan activities that reinforce pedestrian safety
for children, enforce traffic laws in school zones and pursue changes needed to
make school environments more pedestrian-friendly. Our coalition can introduce
other safety information to students and parents through these committees. The
result is a strong relationship among the school community, FedEx and Safe Kids
Tampa.
Be Seen on Halloween
This safety program is directed at school age children and parents. A child
is 4 times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween night than any other
nights. Educational events are held at schools and in the community.
Bicycle Safety:
Adult Community Bicycle Rodeo
Course
This is held at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital
of Tampa. Upon completing this course the participant will be able to borrow the
bike rodeo equipment when needed. This occurs with outside agencies and PTA
members that are interested in bike rodeos at their school.
SK-Ready to Roll Community and School based Bicycle
Safety Skills Course for Children
This is a safety
program developed to teach children the basic rules of the road. Bicycles and
equipment are provided as well as Staff and Volunteers.
Safe Kids Splash into
Safety
Drowning is the leading cause of death for
children ages 4 and under. Our coalition has been working with the Hillsborough
Water Safety Team since 2004 to prevent unintentional drowning for all children.
We have been able to work with the local YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs of
Tampa Bay to get swim lessons to those in need.
Safe Kids Buckle
Up
Safe Kids Tampa offers community car seat classes.
Our free car seat inspection classes are held at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital
throughout the month. These classes are for caregivers that want to learn how to
properly install and use their car seats correctly. For information or to
register for any of our car seat classes please call (813)870-4747.
Safe Kids Week
In
Tampa, Safe Kids Week reaches thousands of households every year through efforts
that include family fun events, public relations and education initiatives. In
years past the safety focus has ranged from child passenger safety to bike
