St. Joseph-s Children-s Head
Shape Program exists because the issues of abnormal head shape are complex. Head
flattening and asymmetry can have a number of causes: torticollis, crowding of
the baby in the uterus, extended time in car seats, infant carriers, as well as
back sleeping and craniosynostosis. In addition, abnormal head shape can take a
number of different forms (i.e. scaphocephaly, trigonocephaly, oxycephaly, as
well as plagiocephaly and brachycephaly).
It is important to distinguish between abnormal head shapes
caused by positioning (or deformation) and abnormal head shapes caused by the
premature closure of cranial sutures (known as craniosynostosis). The former can
be corrected without surgery (by repositioning or cranial orthoses), whereas craniosynostosis requires
surgical intervention. Some patients may also have involvement of the facial
structures, eyes, neck, etc., requiring an interdisciplinary approach to
diagnosis and treatment.
How Appointments
Work
In a unique effort to minimize
patients' visit time and anxiety, the complete team of specialists are present
during patient exams. This reduces the entire appointment time to approximately
a half-hour. Family members are present during the decision-making process, and
are encouraged to ask questions and be “part of the team.”
